ABSTRACT The practice of artificial cranial deformation was a widespread phenomenon in several regions of the world during prehistoric times. The use of morphological craniofacial data to determine evolutionary relationships in human populations is supported by several assumptions, being the most important that these traits mainly reflect genetic variation. The facial skeleton was the most widely used among cranial structures to study Southernmost South American populations, due to the high frequency of cranial deformation found in these groups. However, an agreement has not been reached on the effects of artificial deformation over facial shape, and their putative influence on the inter-population pattern of differences. A primary goal of this paper is to study the effect of artificial cranial deformation on inter-populations shape variation in Pampa, Patagonia, Cuyo and Argentinean northwest regions. Craniofacial morphological data is analyzed by means of geometric morphometric techniques. The results obtained point out that the annular deformation has a low effect on facial inter-population shape variation, being remarkable that there are no differences due to deformation when whole shape variation is compared (i.e. Euclidean distance). In conclusion, the artificial deformation generates a small effect on inter-population facial variation in the studied area.
