ABSTRACT: The comparative demographic study of the population of Pocho Department (province of Córdoba) was carried out in two periods of the XlX and XX centuries. In order to explain the historical behaviour of the population and to diagnose its present probabilities of reproduction and survival, the demographic indicators of fertility, nupciality, mortality, growth and migration were estimated and contrasted. The results indicated, mainly in males, both ageing and a gradually smaller population size. Fertility and mortality have undergone a slight decrease through its historic, more outstanding in the case of infant mortality. All this, together with the negative values of the vegetative growth and the migratory balance -i.e., decrease and emigration- contributed to a not very favourable situation of the population, with respect to growth and survival probabilities in the place.
