Abstract

In this work, we analyze the microanatomy of the ovary of Atlantoraja platana in order to establish the morphofunctional basis of their reproductive biology. The material was obtained from samples of the fishing-fleet of San Matías Gulf. Females were classified according to their maturation degree as immature, maturing and mature. In immature females, the ovary is whitish and flattened. Microscopically, oogonia, primordial and primary follicles were observed. In maturing specimens translucent and/or whitish follicles, larger than immature ones are present. The ovary of mature females has large follicles with yellow yolk. In these specimens follicles in various stages of development and follicular atresia coexist. This is the first report about the microanatomy of the ovary in this fish.
