Abstract

Within the general field of discussions about social cognition, and more specifically within the investigations regarding autism, the novel Second-Person Perspective has been established as an interesting alternative to the Theory of Mind and the Theory of Simulation. However, there are not great developments about the methodological consequences that adhering to this perspective would involve. In this article we discuss two possible versions of a second person methodology: a wide-sense version, and a narrow-sense version. Regarding the first, we present a set of criteria to identify and construct second person variables. Regarding the second, we introduce its foundations, and we differentiate it from the Participant Observation perspective. We conclude that a Second Person Methodology could provide new and valuable information for studies about psychological development and attribution of mental states in autism.
