Abstract

Root growth boxes, “rhizochambers” or “rhizoboxes”, are laboratory preparations used to visually analyze the root growth of plants from different species during the early stages after germination. In this work, we present the development of a mobile application for the automatic analysis and characterization of rhizobox images captured with digital cameras in the laboratory. Three different problems are addressed, and different schemes are proposed to solve each of them: 1) the procedural generation of artificial images for training and evaluating the proposed algorithms, 2) the digital image processing for detecting roots in photographs of rhizochambers, and 3) the morphological processing of binary root images to extract metrics of agronomic interest.
