Analysis of IBM's role in the development of Latin American Informatics through the SHIALC archives: An exploration
Abstract
This paper aims to contribute to the integration of Latin American computer histories by analyzing IBM's role in the implementation of digital systems in Latin American countries. Our scope includes the first and second phase computer imports between the end of the 1950s and the beginning of the 1970s, a period in which IBM dominated the world market. The analysis of the articles from the Symposium on the History of Computing in Latin America and the Caribbean (SHIALC) allows us to understand the strategies and techniques mobilized for the insertion of the company in the Latin American market. On the other hand, the processes of assimilation, negotiation and/or resistance on the part of local computer science communities.
