Abstract

An application for Android devices which calculates the disease Severity of a sample of barley leaves affected by net blotch and/or spot blotch is presented. The sample leaves must be placed on a white background. The application allows users to take a photo of the sample or use an image stored in the device's gallery. Image processing segments the background of the leaves and, in turn, segments the portion of healthy leaves from the diseased ones. The disease Severity is calculated as the ratio of diseased leaf pixels to the total leaf pixels, expressed as a percentage. The application was written in Python based on the Toga, taTogaLib, Pillow, OpenCV, OpencvRollingBall, and NumPy libraries. It was compiled for Android using Briefcase.
