Comparative analysis between solar radiation measurements in Tucuman (26.8°S, 65.1°W) and the ERA5 and NCEP/NCAR reanalysis databases

Reanalysis databases provide an alternative for evaluating various meteorological parameters in areas and periods where measured data is unavailable, but they require prior validation through comparative and error analysis with available measurements. With this purpose, this study presents a comparative analysis between solar radiation data measured at the surface in Tucumán (26.8°S, 65.1°W) and data obtained from two reanalysis databases: ERA5 and NCEP/NCAR. The measured data, recorded at minute intervals, were obtained from the solarimetric network of the National Meteorological Service (SMN) of Argentina for the years 2017 and 2018. We selected five statistics for the comparison, considering daily accumulated values. ERA5 shows better performance than NCEP/NCAR, although both generally overestimate the measured values. The error statistics range between 10% and 25% for ERA5 and between 40% and 50% for NCEP/NCAR. Regarding the detection of daily radiation variability over the two years considered, ERA5 also shows a better fit, resulting in a correlation coefficient of around 0.9 compared to 0.6 for NCEP/NCAR.
