Water storage trends detected in the Paraná river basin from satellite data

The Paraná River basin is the main contributor to the La Plata basin in South America, and the fifth largest hydrographic system in the world. Additionally, it is one of the most economically dynamic areas in Argentina, being also a region of great hydrological significance and sensitive to extreme climatic events. Over the past 20 years, this basin has experienced extraordinary flooding episodes with human losses and material damage, as well as severe situations of continental water storage deficits. Gravimetric satellite missions can monitor the distribution of water mass in the terrestrial system, which is closely related to the consequences of climate change. In this study, data obtained from the GRACE and GRACE-FO missions were used to analyze the variations of water mass within the Middle-Low Paraná basin. This data was then compared with satellite precipitation information and linked to the ENSO events that occurred from 2003 to 2022. Subsequently, a temporal study of the water storage deficit between 2020 and 2022 was conducted based on the identified trends. The results indicate that most of the observed variations in the water storage are related to extreme climatic events (such as the floods of 2015-2017 and the droughts of 2009 and 2020-2022), and to El Niño and La Niña episodes, respectively.
