Abstract

The definition of the functions of the State is associated with the limits in the fields of its action and has motivated intense debates between different ideological currents, the results of which have been reflected in the constitutions and laws of the countries. The Social Doctrine of the Catholic Church has participated in the controversy. The principles of social function of property, subsidiarity and common good are what guide their arguments.

The objective of this article is to describe the conceptualization process of these principles and propose their limits to accurately identify the functions of the State.
