Abstract

Silence has a specific weight in academic musical composition. However, in the different analytical works, the figure of silence is usually ignored. Rather, other aspects such as harmony, structure, dynamics, or texture are addressed. There are not many studies that recognize the importance of silence within the musical discourse. In the following pages, three parameters of silence in music will be developed: broken silence, unexpected silence, and imagined silence. With this, it will be possible to analyze whether the figure of silence is something secondary or not, based on the proposed musical passages. At the same time, it is intended to contribute to this article to give more magnitude to the communicative nature of silence in music.
