A specification for CFGs to support Modelling and Simulation using SES and DEVS

This paper is intended to propose the design of three context-free grammars (CFG) as support tools for discrete event-based Modelling and Simulation (M&S). Firstly, this document briefly describes the challenges of modelling and simulation of real event-based systems and the System Entity Structure (SES) ontology for constructing models that describe hierarchical relationships between system entities. Following that, an outline of the important components of a high-level conceptual model is provided, including entities, attributes, states, events, activities, and functions, which can be specified using the Discrete Event System Specification (DEVS) formalism. Finally, a GLC is proposed which contributes to the formal definition of coupled DEVS models. All grammars were implemented using the ANTLR4 tool. A modelling example common to all three levels is also presented in order to demonstrate each grammar’s functionality. These CFGs may further on serve as the basis for the development of a comprehensive software tool that will facilitate mapping the various levels of modelling required during the development of simulation models.
