Abstract

The increasing availability of digital entertainment content is creating significant uncertainty for students and recent graduates who are seeking to enter the video game industry through their portfolios. As a result, educational institutions are challenged to enhance the quality of their game development programs to align with current industry standards. One effective strategy for curricular improvement involves emphasizing the development of innovative experiences with experimental gameplay mechanics, thereby enabling graduates to distinguish themselves in a highly competitive market. This article presents research findings on teaching experimental game design by prototyping across four undergraduate university courses over a four-year period. Based on the results of this methodology, a course model is developed for program directors, researchers, instructors, and students. This model aims to contribute to the state of the art in game research and teaching by providing a conceptual framework and practical tools that enable future game developers to succeed in the video game industry.
