Abstract

The article propases to show the main lines of the intellectuals' performance in the fight against fascism in Brazil between 1933 and 1939. We will demonstrate the militancy's intensity and permanency, in opposition to the left wing's sectarianism as much as the govemmenfs repressive forces. With this purpose, we have distinguished three moments in the fight against fascism: the period immediately after Hitler's ascension, when two antifascist organizations disputed the condition of such in a fight still marked by the anti-war ideal; the year 1935, when the intellectuals tried a joint action in the brief Aliança Nacional libertadora (ANL); and, finally, the shaded years of police repression, when many intellectuals continued their militancy in exile in South American countries ar at least kept their actions in a moderate but continuous way in Brazil.
