Los efectos direccionales de la protección aduanera en la Argentina
Abstract
Tariff protection over the period 1959-1966 stimulated the development of industries producing consumer and intermedia te goods for the local private market, discriminating against the production of all other tradables. Considering the limited size of that market, this was an obstable to establishing optimum size plants, with a Ioss of internal economies. Furthermore, often the high tariff barriers gave the monopoly of local supply to one firm, with a loss of welfarc.Given that this was the main instrument for industrial promotion over the period, the negative consequences of these effects on growth must have been important.
