Abstract

The article examines the theoretical validity of the relatively recent neoclassical premise postulating that the state of technical knowledge can be defined by means of an aggregate relationship among output, labour and capital. By resorting to a model of production with heterogeneous capital, it is shown that this premise is theoretically untenable. The definition of an aggregate production function involves the consideration of distribution, technical choice and the structure of net output, ,contrary to the wide-spread view that it depends on technical conditions alone. Hence, the idee of an aggregate marginal productivity of capital can also be dismissed.
