The research aims to hierarchize and characterize the municipalities of the Regional Crown of Central Mexico using a set of indicators. The study challenges traditional urban-rural classifications, which omit intermediate spaces in urban-regional consolidation. A Principal Component Analysis was conducted to identify the degree of consolidation of the municipalities, followed by a Cluster Analysis to group them. The results show that the municipalities with the highest consolidation are concentrated in Mexico City and its surrounding areas, while peripheral municipalities exhibit lower urban consolidation. The methodology provides a detailed understanding of urban-regional hierarchies. The study identifies five clusters ranging from central urban areas to rural municipalities, revealing a gradient of urbanization and peri-urban development. Additionally, it highlights the relevance of peri-urban spaces in shaping metropolitan and regional dynamics, key elements for effective territorial planning.
