Abstract

Access to justice is a key element to provide for the effective protection of human rights internationally. During the last few decades, people's ability to resort directly to international judicial bodies has marked a milestone in the evolution of contemporary international law. This shows a shift from a system traditionally centered around the State towards one which ackowledges human beings as subjects of law. The expansion of the right of standing (ius standi) of individuals in international courts has been crucial in the struggle to protect human rights, which sheds light on the process through which international law has become more humanized, as legal scholars of the likes of Antônio Augusto Cançado Trindade have proposed.
