Rev. Arg. Antrop. Biol. 2(1): 301-306, 1999.

ABSTRACT: In the present paper the frequency of dental caries in the skeletal population of Santana do Riacho I (Serra do Cipó, central Brazil), a funerary Paleo-indian site dated between 12 and 8 K.y.a, was analyzed. The results showed that 10,5% (8/76) of the dental pieces were affected by caries. When this frequency of prevalence was compared with the figures available in the literature for different kinds of subsistence strategies (Turner II, 1979; Larsen, 1987), it indicated that the Paleo-indian population of Santana do Riacho I had a high consumption of carbohydrates. This suggests that gathering was of paramount importance for this group. Rev. Arg. Antrop. Biol. 2(1): 301-306, 1999.
