Abstract

The variations that dentoalveolar structures undergo during a person’s life cycle influence adult facial configuration. This work describes the facial morphology and occlusal variables in adults from the municipality of Yaguajay, Sancti Spíritus, Cuba. In 2022, a descriptive observational study was conducted on 24 adults from Yaguajay. Facial height, bizygomatic width, facial morphological index, and facial type according to Pospisil were determined. The occlusal variables studied included malocclusions using the Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI), dental wear, according to the modified Smith and Knight index, and posterior tooth loss through absolute frequencies. An Excel database was created to generate tables and graphics for the summary and descriptive analysis of the information. The average facial height was 126.3 mm, bizygomatic width was 139.3 mm, and the facial morphological index was 90.7, with a predominance of leptoprosopic subjects. The mean number of worn teeth was 10.7, with incipient wear being the most frequent. The overall DAI was 24.2, with normal occlusion or minimal malocclusion prevailing. Predominated the categories of 4 to 7 and 1 to 3 teeth lost. Different degrees of dental wear, malocclusions, and tooth loss were observed across various facial types, with no specific pattern identified regarding oral condition and facial morphology in the studied peasant population. These findings demonstrate the complex and dynamic relationship between dentoalveolar and craniofacial structures throughout life.
