Abstract

The calcination or muffling method consists in estimating soil organic matter (MO) by weight loss by ignition (LOI) or calcination. This is a simple and inexpensive method and may be appropriate for estimating total organic carbon (COT) if calibrated correctly with standardized measurement methodologies. The objective was to calibrate LOI for COT estimation in Inceptisols of Entre Ríos. Samples (0-20 cm depth) were obtained from 32 grassland sites or Eucalyptus grandis plantations, which were analyzed by dry combustion with automatic analyzer and two LOI treatments: (1) pretreatment 120°C for 2 h, ignition from 2 h to 500 °C (LOI120-500); and (2) pretreatment 105 °C for 8 h, ignition 16 h at 350 °C (LOI105-350). Simple linear regressions were performed between COT (by dry combustion) and MO (according to LOI120-500 and LOI105-350). Regression intercepts and slopes were compared. The models were compared on the basis of their residual variance using an F test. A close relationship between COT and MO was found in both LOI treatments (LOI120-500: COT=0.351MO+0.056 R2=0.84; LOI105-350: COT=0.564MO-0.125 R2=0.91). However, LOI105-350 presented a significantly higher fit. The MO to COT conversion factor (1.773) calculated from this model does not differ from the widely used factor. The treatment LOI105-350 estimates in an accurate way the COT in Inceptisols of Entre Ríos and its applicability in other soils could be evaluated.
