Abstract

Recognizing the sources of variation in the wood of raulí, Nothofagus alpina (Poepp. & Endl.) Oerst. is of vital usefulness to develop forest improvement programs and the rational use of this valuable tree species. The objectives of this study were to determine the sources and patterns of variation in the density and the anatomical characteristics of its wood. We worked with trees from Lácar basin, Patagonia Argentina, from which bore samples were taken at 1.3 m above the ground. Microscopic preparations were made from every ten year sections from pith to bark (60 years) that were macerated. The variables studied were: basic density, pore number/mm2, tangential pore diameter, vessel element length, fiber length, fiber wall thickness, fiber diameter and wood ray length. Variance analysis was performed using the site, the tree and the age as variation sources. The major variation source in anatomical characteristics of the wood was the age of the trees, evidencing a maturation process of the vascular cambium. The main variation source of wood density was the tree, resulting a valuable parameter in specimen selection processes, for projects involving the improvement and domestication of this species.
