Resumo

Johnsongrass (Sorghum halepense (L.) Pers.) is one of the most important species of perennial weeds in the world. Despite the different chemical control strategies studied, its incidence has not decreased in agricultural systems. Because of this, biological control appears as an alternative weed management strategy. The objective of this study was to evaluate for the first time in Argentina, the efficiency of different methods of application of strains of Fusarium oxysporum on growth of johnsongrass. In addition, the effect of the pathogen seed germination of corn, sunflower, soybean and sorghum was determinated. We used two methods of application of the pathogens. The application of a spore suspension of F. oxysporum in soil (liquid technique) showed that after three months the total of the plants had died, while with the technique of soil infestation with a solid culture of the pathogen (solid technique) at 90 days only 65% of the plants had died. F. oxysporum did not decrease the percentage of germination of soy, sunflower, grain sorghum and corn crops, so this fungus could be used as a biocontrol agent for Johnsongrass. However further studies on its effect on these and other hosts are necessary to fully assess the risks its use would involve.
