Working with families within a practice-among-several framework

This paper focuses on work with families of children and adolescents with relational difficulties, particularly those presenting with Autism Spectrum Disorders and psychosis, in a Spanish institution that operates through the practice-among-several, framed within Lacanian-oriented psychoanalysis. Patients usually arrive through referrals from health centers where they have received their diagnoses. The work addresses the place of the subject in the discourse of the Other, the representations that families construct around their children’s diagnoses, as well as the expectations and reasons that lead them to bring their children into treatment spaces. An unavoidable aspect of this work is distinguishing the reasons for the parents’ consultation from the reasons why the children and adolescents consent to remain in the institution.
