Abstract

This article presents a comparison between the presidential rhetoric of Nestor Kirchner (2003-2007) and Nicolas Sarkozy (2007-2012) based on the uses of diversity in their political speeches. Diversity is a double challenge for politics and its representation. On the one side, to politically represent the diversity means to speak and act on behalf of the “diverse” in the political system. On the other hand, diversity questions the State-nation as a political form. This discursive/political comparison is intended to present an approach to the general question: can the presidential address operate as an observatory of the political effects of diversity in national integration models and the Republican forms that legitimize them?
