Abstract

This paper aims to demonstrate that the recent evolution of the argentine labor market cannot he explained without taking account of the path of macroeconomic adjustment given by the income of capitals which took place since 1991, its consequences on relative prices and the subsequent negative shock triggered by Mexican devaluation. Given the behavior of the supply of labor during the expansive phase and of the demand of employment during the contractive phase, when the cycle of incoming and flying of capitals be ended, unemployed will increase and employment levels will decrease, both when compared with the starting point and with a steady long term path. From this perspective, it becomes clear that the solution to the problem of unemployment in Argentina cannot be restricted to the adoption of specific labor market policies, but it will also demand macroeonomics policies.
