Abstract

Horticultural crops are commonly affected by numerous pests, among which insects stand out. Particularly aphids (Hemiptera - Aphididae) cause direct and indirect damage by feeding on the sap of various plant species. The mustard aphid, Lipaphis erysimi, is an aphid specific to brassicas. Within the framework of the management of these pests in horticultural production, the use of plant extracts is currently considered an environmentally friendly alternative. Among bio-inputs, volatile organic compounds obtained from plants are potential products for pest control. The objective of this study was to develop low environmental impact and efficient bio-inputs for pest control based on plant extracts. The repellency and mortality effects of essential oil of cedrón and that of eugenol obtained from clove extract on the mustard aphid were evaluated under controlled laboratory conditions. According to the analysis of the data obtained, it was found that the essential oil of cedrón has a significant effect on mortality. Therefore, it can be considered an important alternative for integrated pest management in horticultural crops.
