Abstract

In orden to reduce the socio-environmental impact of anticorrosive paints, traditional anticorrosive pigments and additives have been replaced with other environmentally friendly ones. Among these are aqueous extracts of plant species. TEA, COFFEE and YERBA wastes are household waste belonging to the compostable fraction and have been used as starting material to obtain a second aqueous extract with anticorrosive capacity. This way of work, based on the principles of the circular economy, allowed us to obtain corrosion-inhibitors extracts for the protection of AA 1050 aluminum.

The anticorrosive properties of the inhibitor extracts were studied by potentiodynamic polarization curves in NaCl 0,1 M medium. The inhibitory efficiencies obtained were more than acceptable. A naked eye analysis of the working electrodes allowed us to observe the protective effect of the extracts, in contrast with the clear formation of corrosion products in the sample without inhibitors. The yerba extract was selected for presenting the highest inhibitory efficiency, and it was found that it modifies the corrosion potential of aluminum towards more positive values. The SEM-EDS study showed the highest Al/O ratio and the absence of Cl on the surface for the sample with inhibitor. Finally, a compatibility test was carried out between the components of a primer and the extract, obtaining very good results in the laboratory.
