An analysis of the short story "La fiesta ajena" (The stolen party) by Liliana Heker is presented, based on a literary-linguistic approach, in order to see how otherness is built on the "us/them" dichotomy and its different variants. Contributions of the theory of linguistics are considered such as the theory of relevance, context and courtesy, to show how these reinforce the literary objectives. Throughout this analysis it becomes evident why the story is called "La fiesta ajena"
