Abstract

The diferent surgical procedures used to repair spinal fractures include: Plastic plates fixed with screws to the spinal processes, Pins and wires through the dorsal compartment, Cross pins through the vertebral bodies, Screws inserted through the articular processes, Screws and/or Steinmann pins trhough the vertebral bodies embodied in methyl-metacrylate. None of the said methods per se are able to neutralize and stabilize a traumatized spine. Furthermore, they have limitations related to the region of the spine affected, age and temper of the dog, shape of the fracture/luxation and type of forces involved. The Modified Argentina Spine System, known as SECAM for Spanish initials, have being used by the authors in a series of experimental and clinical cases. We believe that this system constitutes a very useful option to achieve an adequate stabilization of the spine, with the advantage of being adaptable to the different spinal regions. Its insertion requires an easy and quick surgical procedure that neutralizes both, the medial and ventral spinal compartments, a requisite to obtain proper segmental immobilization.
