Musicking
interdisciplinary contributions to the field of Music Therapy
Keywords:
music therapy, musicking, musicing, music sociology, interdisciplineAbstract
The concept of ‘musicking’ enters the field of music therapy from two different disciplines: musicology and music education. This review, structured from an exploratory and descriptive design, addresses the origins of ‘musicking’, beginning with the chronology of Small and Elliott's most influential publications. It exposes influences, basics, characteristics, similarities and differences between both proposals, and addresses how they entered the field of music therapy and what their contributions are. It is concluded that this notion is a tool to approach any music scene or scenario, both in the clinical and community settings, and also in everyday life. At the same time, it enables dialogues and interdisciplinary cooperation between fields interested in the study of music, culture and society, which is the case of music therapy and sociology of music.
