Abstract

The purpose of this study is to estimate the technical efficiency of each branch of Argentine manufacturing industry and relate it to a measure of involvement in International trade and degree of industrial concentration. Indicators of efficiency are derived using deterministic and stochastic production frontiers with different distributions of the error term; in all cases estimates are made by corrected ordinary least squares methods and taking data from the economic census. Although within each approach the ranking is maintained regardless of the error structure selected, the results obtained using deterministic production frontiers are different from those calculated using stochastic models. Furthermore, the results indicate that no differences exist in the efficiency of branches grouped by destination of sales and that there could be a moderate positive correlation between efficiency and industrial concentration.
