Abstract

This paper poses the question whether, from a methodological point of view, Economic Theory could benefit from recent developments that took place in the field of non-equilibrium Thermodynamics. In the first part these developments are surveyed. In the second one, the superb effort that Economic Theory has devoted to equilibrium analysis and the little attention that analysis of the behaviour of far from equilibrium systems has deserved are remarked. In this respect, it is argued that non-equilibrium Economic Theory would precisely allow to analyze the processes of change, viewing instability as a source of modification in the behaviour of systems, just as it happened in non equilibrium Thermodynamics.
