Abstract

The existing theoretical and empirical studies on the subject of patents have been elaborated starting from the reality of technology –generating countries and on the whole do not reflect the experience of technology– importing countries. In virtue of this fact, the authors have considered it interesting to look into the whole problem of patents from the point of view of technology –importing countries. Empirical evidence regarding the Argentine case is analyzed, revealing the existence of two different groups of patentees: on the one hand, large multinational companies, that have acquired increasing importance over the last few years and, on the other hand, independent inventors which have rapidly lost significance. Some lines are suggested –towards the end of the paper– along which research could continue in the future. The authors have pursued research along some of such lines and their results will turn up in a forthcoming paper.
