In this article, I aim to discuss the challenges to U.S. hegemony posed by the country's involvement in Afghanistan. This will be accomplished through a review of the literature addressing Afghanistan's relationships with the U.S.S.R. and with the U.S. during the Cold War, and how U.S. actions to destabilize its rival's influence in the region have had a profound impact on global geopolitics. Additionally, official documents from the U.S. Department of State and other governmental bodies will be scrutinized in the analysis of the proposed topic. In particular, the analysis will focus on how the destabilization of the region by paramilitary forces trained and supported by the U.S. subsequently reverberated in the emergence of political organizations that turned against the U.S. These conflicts gained prominence, especially following the September 11 attacks in 2001. As a consequence of these events, the U.S. decided to invade Afghanistan, resulting in ongoing wars with no possibility of resolution. It is evident that the social and human costs resulting from the destabilization of Afghanistan, as a direct outcome of the strategy adopted to confront the U.S. rival during the Cold War, were and will continue to be colossal.
