Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to make an interpretation of how the discourse evolution of the Group of Eight (G8) reflects ideological transformations in international society as well as changes in the power relations among states. By analyzing two official statements by this group, the Declaration of Rambouillet, of 1975 (with the former G6) and the Chair´s Summary at the L´Aquila Summit of 2009, this study concludes that the world has experienced an ideological movement in which the G8 has gone from defending capitalism to promoting a revised vision of globalization, along with a shift in the international distribution of power from framework based around power blocs to a multipolar world structure.
