Abstract

This article analyzes the performance of the Brazilian diplomat Francisco Adolfo de Varnhagen during the crisis in the Chincha Islands, which pitted Spain against Peru, Chile, Ecuador and Bolivia between the years 1864 and 1866. Varnhagen's performance demonstrates the chancellery's dubious positioning Brazilian in the face of conflicts between South American neighbors and European powers, illustrating the insecurities of Brazilian foreign policy between Europe and America. Varnhagen went against the essentially neutral dispositions of the Itamaraty, giving notes of support to the South American neighbors, and was reprimanded for that. The article makes use of extensive Brazilian diplomatic documentation and provides new perspectives to understand this important conflict in Peruvian, Chilean and Spanish historiography.
