Diplomacy in a Fractured World
The UN Model Experience 80 Years after the Creation of the United Nations

In light of the United Nations Secretary-General's warning about a “fractured world” during the organization's 80th anniversary, we set out to go over the experience of the UN Model in La Plata, Argentina. Our aim is to show that diplomacy is still a relevant tool for conflict resolution through youth practice. To this end, the article describes the dynamics of the largest public and free model in the country –an initiative supported by the efforts of 170 volunteers–, focusing on the role played by the author of this article as president of the UNHCR. The results highlight the students' ability to overcome political paralysis and reach complex consensus through structured debate and institutional negotiation. We conclude that this activity constitutes a comprehensive educational experience, where new generations reaffirm their commitment to multilateralism in the face of current global skepticism.
