Sporotrichosis is a cosmopolitan infectious disease caused by the Sporothrix schenckii complex for which the soil of warm areas is the optimum environment for development. It affects mammals and is considered an important clinical zoonotic disease. Dimorphism is its main feature that appears at 28 °C. It also shows a saprophytic mycelium stage and a parasitic yeast stage at 37 °C. Incubation time is variable ranging from 3 days to 3 months. Sporotrichosis affects mainly the skin and lymph nodes. The most affected areas are the limbs and the face. Dogs and cats can become infected mostly in endemic zones. Current revision emphasizes on direct and indirect laboratory diagnostic methods. A compilation of clinical signs, therapy and an algorithm for diagnosing the disease are also presented.
