The paper offers an interpretation of the behavior of trade flows in MERCOSUR from the perspective of relatively small economies, supported by a battery of appropriate indicators, and in the discussion of the results with specialized literature. In particular, it was proposed to verify if MERCOSUR fostered an increasing dependency, and if the possibilities of international insertion of these countries were affected by remaining within the regional scheme. The main result is the rejection of both hypotheses, while interesting questions are posed to advance within this perspective.
