Between segmentation unit and note as music notation unit

Abstract

Musical notation uses the note as a unit of representation, and musicians have assumed it as a natural unit for thinking in music. However, the segmentation of a melody into notes would seem to imply dimensions that have not been sufficiently studied. In this work, it was proposed to investigate access to the note as a segmentation and representation unit by a girl with significant development of musical performance skills, but without knowledge of musical notation. To this end, five interviews were carried out over a period of six months in which different activities were proposed. Although it was observed that the girl did not initially use the note as a segmentation unit, later her represented units were redefined according to the proposed activities. Finally, after starting to read sheet music for her instrument, the girl managed to segment the musical stimulus into notes. It is proposed that the possibility of accessing the notes as constituent units of a musical fragment would be dependent on the conceptualizations that derive from the acquisition of the musical notation.
