Abstract

The growing economic role of China in Latin America and the current debates about the negative or positive influence of China in the region contextualize this research. The objective is to describe the presence and orientation of China in the economic discourse of the publication Panorama of International Insertion of Latin America and the Caribbean of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC). The research reached two conclusions. First, China's presence does not grow uniformly over time. Second, the frames of China's problems and threats to the region predominate in the 1998-2001 period. As of 2002, the frames focus on opportunities.
