Métodos contraceptivos en gatas: pasado, presente y futuro

Resumen

El control reproductivo temporal y no quirúrgico en gatas es fundamental para evitar camadas no deseadas y, de esta manera, disminuir la sobrepoblación y sus consecuencias negativas. Con este fin se han estudiado varias drogas, entre las cuales se encuentran progestágenos, andrógenos, melatonina, análogos de la GnRH y vacunas contraceptivas. Algunas de ellas han mostrado efectividad, aunque en determinados casos la duración del efecto contraceptivo no es predecible. Además, no están exentas de producir efectos adversos. En este trabajo se realiza una revisión sobre métodos contraceptivos en gatas, desde el comienzo de su utilización. El mismo reúne información relevante acerca de su utilidad, así como de la complejidad de la contracepción en esta especie, lo cual plantea la necesidad de encontrar alternativas que sean efectivas, seguras y predecibles.
