Abstract

This paper analyzes the contributions of Raúl Prebisch and the Latin American structuralism to the study of the International Political Economy. It is argued that the Argentinean economist was the promoter of a Latin American school of thought, structuralism, which made original contributions to the analysis of the relations between power and welfare in International Economic Relations. The article analyzes Prebisch's place in the discipline of International Relations. Subsequently, the Prebischian explanation of the main topic of the structuralist research agenda is examined, starting with discussion on the levels of analysis, and then evaluating its explanatory and normative elements. In this sense, issues such as the conception of the international economic order, the approach to economic development and the role of economic integration are analyzed.

Doctor en Ciencia Política del Instituto de Estudios Políticos (Aix-en-Provence, Francia). Titular de una Maestría en Relaciones Internacionales (Universidad de Durham (Inglaterra) y de un DEA en Ciencia Política Comparada (Instituto de Estudios Políticos de Aix-en-Provence – IEP Aix, Francia). Es profesor-investigador del Centro de Estudios de América Latina y el Caribe (CIALC) de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). Es miembro del Sistema Nacional de Investigadores (SNI), nivel II en México. Es editor regional de la revista Latin American Policy. Sus trabajos han sido publicados en diversos libros, revistas en América Latina, Europa, África y Asia.
