MERCOSUR: about standoff of an integration process

Abstract

This paper aims to describe the current state of uncertainty regarding the process of integration ofthe MERCOSUR. From the earliest historical background, this journey goes through time to reach the Asunción Treaty and the creation of UNASUR. Different conceptions about what the MERCOSUR should be, taking into account similar debate in the European Union. Are analysed institutional blockages under the South American scheme, as well as the present challenges are tried to identify so as to unlock them.
