Opportunities for theory and practice to intersect are rare, as their differing characteristics and the demands for results often create a divide, with limited collaboration between teams focused on cultural heritage management and those dedicated to research. The academic field frequently approaches practice without fully addressing the everyday challenges that impact heritage management, particularly when it involves a site listed as World Heritage. Meanwhile, teams tasked with addressing the daily complexities of managing and administering such sites often find themselves caught up in the whirlwind of navigating solutions across various governmental levels and engaging with local communities. In 2021, such an opportunity arose through a call issued by the World Heritage Leadership Program, aimed at improving heritage conservation and management practices.
Collaborating between those working directly in the field and teams located kilometres away presented a challenge. This challenge was successfully met thanks to the involvement of Alfredo Conti, who provided the tools to coordinate our efforts, enabling each participant to contribute meaningfully to the project from their area of expertise.
