This article is part of the initial advancements of a university research project that aims to investigate the connection between the production of specialized knowledge and decision-making in the design of public policies related to tourism, from 2019 to 2023, in the Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina.
In this publication, we briefly present the background that frames the research, focusing on theoretical discussions among different perspectives and authors regarding the investigated topic.
The state of the art on tourism and the public sector reveals few academic contributions addressing the relationship between scientific knowledge and public policy formulation in the region, particularly in the context of changing national and provincial political dynamics. However, we note that this is an emerging field of study.
The theoretical exploration shows that there are limitations and obstacles in the connection between academics and public officials. However, there are also points of articulation and collaboration between both spheres that can enhance the quality and effectiveness of tourism policies in the Province of Buenos Aires. Based on the reflections and findings presented, we conclude that there is a need to shift from the traditional concept of knowledge transfer to one of knowledge translation. This shift implies that the design of public policies should be adapted to the specific provincial context in order to ensure their relevance and applicability.
