Nature-Culture in a Regenerative Key: Constructing Tourist Narratives Around the Authenticity of Protected Natural Areas

Protected natural areas, particularly Argentinian National Parks, have experienced a growing influx of tourists in recent decades. This situation has fostered new forms of human interaction with nature, influencing how tourism is conceptualized and promoted in these spaces. It has also contributed to the development of imaginaries and narratives that differ from those established during the early stages of the parks' creation (Orgaz Agüera & Castellanos Verdugo, 2013; Trentini, 2016; Castro, 2020). The aim of this study is to examine how changes in the perception of nature challenge the tourist discourse constructed around the controversial notion of authenticity in Protected Natural Areas (PNAs). Methodologically, the study adopts a theoretical approach, problematizing the topic and comparing the conservation objectives defined by the National Parks Administration (NPA) from its inception to the present day. Through this comparison, the natural features valued in different historical stages are identified, along with the narratives built around them, questioning the idea of authenticity as it has been sustained over time, especially in light of the transformative and disruptive notions introduced by the regeneration paradigm in tourism.
