Innovation involves both an activity and its outcome (OCDE & Eurostat, 2018) and it is related to innovation capabilities, considered as a special asset for the development and commercialisation of new technologies, the introduction of new products, and the adoption of new processes, especially in contexts of rapid technological change. Innovation capabilities, in turn, are decisive not only in terms of innovation outcomes, but also of competitiveness. This article aims to determine the innovation capabilities variables that are studied in Latin America, compared to the innovation capabilities variables that are analysed in the 2019 Global Competitiveness Report by the World Economic Forum or “WEF” (Schwab, 2019). The research is developed through a systematic review using the PRISMA methodology. Results are obtained for the countries that study innovation capabilities, the variables that are analysed in the studies on innovation capabilities in Latin America, in comparison with the variables analysed by the WEF. The results show a partial articulation between the variables analysed in the studies on innovation capabilities in Latin America and the variables that make up the WEF.
