This paper assesses the conditions under which the energy transition in Argentina could be sustainable. To this aim, the country’s energy sector structural functioning is analyzed, as well as the approach and position adopted by the National Energy Department in its official documents. It is highlighted that, under the current sectoral structure, the default trajectory of an energy transition will be regressive in terms of development. Based on the premise that the energy transition implies a process of structural change, the conditions for it to be progressive and, therefore, sustainable, are here presented.
